My Mom Verdict
The Selection is one of the best starting points for YA, especially for ages 12-13.
There is no language and hardly any violence in this book. It does talk about the rebels attacking the castle and hurting people but it doesn’t go into detail.
The only thing I would consider with this book is there are a couple of specific scenes where the main character is making out with her boyfriend. It gets a little heated talking about hands on each other and wanting more. It doesn’t get explicit and there is no sex but if you aren’t comfortable with your 12 year old reading that maybe wait until they are a little more mature.
If your teen is just getting into YA books and enjoys romance or character-driven stories, this is a good choice.
